Continuous line drawing

Graphic fineliner continuous line drawing of sunset landscape

Take a different approach to sketching a sunset and challenge yourself not to lift your pen off the page. This is a great way to stay present with the motion of your pen tip as you work out how to create your picture. Find out how by watching our handy how-to video.

Grab a journal and use it to channel your creativity. Collage, paint, doodle, and draw across an open spread, allowing yourself to listen to your instincts and journey across the page as your heart desires. Get messy and work with colours that make you happy – it’s all part of the process!

Colourful doodling

Get colourful and doodle with bright tones and metallics. You don’t need to have a vision or direction – just go with the flow. You might find repeating shapes and patterns is a great way to explore colour combos and play with contrast.

Ink illustrations

Watercolours are great for intuitive art, as they spread across the page freely. You can manipulate the colours with a brush, water, and blow dryer, finding meaning in the shapes as they dry. Add ink at the end to bring your vision to life and add details that fit right in – whatever seems right is great!

Easy acrylic paint pouring

Abstract purple tone acrylic pour painting

If you want the paint to lead the way, why not try acrylic pouring? From flip-cup pouring to Dutch pouring, there’s loads of ways to try out fluid art. The colours have a life of their own and will find their place as they settle on your canvas. We’ve got stacks of online tutorials you can check out so you can get pouring sooner!

Person abstract art

Bring some familiarity into the abstract and paint a person! This talented artist let their intuition guide them and brought a human form into her glowing abstract scene. The viewer is left to find their own meaning in the shapes and colours, so it’s an intuitive experience from start to finish.

Gradient art

Gradient blue textured painting with scalloped paint strokes

Get stuck into satisfying texture and make a colour gradient with dots of paint. You can pick two colours to create a transition between (in this case dark blue and white) and then get dotting! Use a palette knife to apply the paint thickly and let the colours guide you to make the gradient smooth or sharp. We’ve got a project lesson you can check out to have a go at home!
