Acrylic Mediums Painting

Dason Luo's texture painting with acrylics

Dason Luo (@heyitsdason) is a texture art specialist. He's known for his sculptural food paintings that look good enough to eat, so follow along to see how to make one at home!

1. Bacon sculpture

-     Spread a thin layer of modelling paste onto non-stick paper

-    Leave it to dry; this will be used later to create bacon strips

2. Using modelling paste

-    Draw a circle on your canvas for a plate outline

-    Fill the circle with modelling paste

-    Smooth the paste out but leave some texture for added interest

-    Fill a piping bag with modelling paste

-    Pipe a border around the plate

-    Use a brush to build up and shape the plate's border

-    Allow the modelling paste to dry completely

-    Once dry, lightly hand sand the plate to smooth while leaving some texture intact

3. How to paint a plate

-    Mix a dollop of blue paint with a little yellow and white

-    Paint around the plate and canvas background with this colour

-    Add more yellow and white to the mix to create a lighter shade

-    Paint the plate using the lighter shade to distinguish it from the background

4. Painting bacon

-    Peel the dried modelling paste off the non-stick paper

-    Use a craft knife to cut it into bacon strip shapes

-    Paint the strips with a red base coat

-    Add light stripes with white and yellow for a streaky look

-    Use the bacon colour mix (red, white, and yellow) to outline the edges and build texture

-    Layer the colours for a dynamic and realistic effect

-    Allow the strips to dry completely, then place them on the plate

5. Painting the eggs

-    Add two thick, rounded spots of modelling paste onto the plate for egg whites

-    Shape the paste to mimic the organic look of egg whites

-    Mix a yolk colour from yellow, red, and white

-    Add a dollop of the yolk colour to each egg white for the centre

The final artwork looks good enough to eat!
